Along with our Catholic values we believe in choosing respect and always expressing behaviour choices positively, choosing to restore justice and reconcile friendships from the school’s Catholic Ethos. As a result of this cases of bullying at St Mary’s are rare, but we recognise that it could happen and so regularly use opportunities to teach children and staff about bullying such as: Anti-bullying week in November, NSPCC assemblies and the Diana Institute Big Assemblies. Child line posters and our anti-bullying strategies are displayed around school for children to use, including a display in the school hall which is updated annually and reflects the message of Anti-bullying week.

Anti-Bullying Club/Play pals

Previously, as a result of many anti-bullying projects Year 5 children prompted, organised and did run an ‘Anti-Bullying Club.’ There are numerous children in KS2 who are named and available to ‘comfort people and make them happy.’ This group was known as the play pals. These children follow the school’s behaviour policy of being active listeners and restoring justice asking all the children involved for solutions. There were allocated members on duty every lunchtime. This group also took time to read from the Bible and discuss how the morals link to our playground culture.

Anti-Bullying Charter

Each child created a heart to put together and share the message that we have ‘A Heart that sees’ In class we discussed and promised to do all they can to help prevent bullying, to be a good friend and to help people if they are being bullied.

Anti bullying week: 2023 2024

Anti- bullying week is being highlighted in the week beginning the 13th of November.

The theme is MAKE A NOISE

The theme of Make A Noise About Bullying came about following consultation with teachers and pupils by the Anti-Bullying Alliance which coordinates Anti-Bullying Week every year in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Teachers and children wanted a theme that empowered them to do something positive to counter the harm and hurt that bullying causes.

Following the success of the campaign in 2022 – when 80% of schools marked the week, reaching over 7.5 million children and young people – Anti-Bullying Week will remind everyone whether it’s in school, at home, in the community or online, we can bring an end to bullying.

As usual, schools are able to download free teaching resources and themed assemblies. These focus on the activities we can take to encourage young people to consider what bullying means to us, how banter can turn into something more hurtful, and what we can do to stop bullying. We have also developed a media, social media and community based campaign to help bring Anti-Bullying Week to life whether you’re at home, work or in school.
